A Daily Allowance

Posted by Unknown Monday, February 14, 2011 0 comments

"Day by day the king gave Jehoiachin a regular allowance as long as he lived." 2 Kings 25:30

Jehoiachin wasn't sent away from the king's palace with provisions that would last him for months; rather, his allowance was given to him on a daily basis.

In a very real sense his situation is akin to our own. A daily portion is all that a person really wants. We don't need tomorrow's supplies; that day has not yet dawned, and its wants are yet unborn. The thirst which we may allow in the month of June doesn't need to be quenched in February, because we don't feel it yet; if we have enough for each day as the day arrives we shall never know want.

Sufficient for the day is all that we can enjoy. We cannot eat, drink or wear more than a day's supply of food and clothing; the surplus gives us the worry of storing it, and the anxiety of watching against a robber or thief.

This is all that we can expect; a craving for more than this is ungrateful. When our Father doesn't give us more we should be content with His daily allowance.

"Thou my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to me, All along my pilgrim journey, Savior let me walk with Thee."

Where Have All the Prophets Gone?

Posted by Unknown Sunday, February 13, 2011 0 comments

Today's message focused upon the role of Prophets.

Prophets are those persons who speak to the people for God. While God is certainly capable of speaking for Himself. He uses prophets to help humankind understand God's word, God's will and God's way.

In the Book of Amos you will find him telling the religious persons of his day that God wouldn't accept your burnt offerings and sacrifices until judgment roll down as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Amos also sees God holding a plumb line to illustrate that the people of Israel are out of sync, out of relationship and out of order with God.

This is the function of the plumb line to measure the extent to which one is out of alignment with God.

Where are the modern day prophets who hold up God's plumb line to measure how individuals, institutions, and governments are out of sync, out of relationship and out of order with God?

"He will give your another Counselor to be with you forever." John 14:15

Where do you go to get advice? Who do you turn to when life imposes upon your questions that need answering from someone with wisdom greater than your own?

Jesus has confided that His Spirit is the Counselor that will be available to you. He is Immanuel - God with us, dwelling in and with His people. He provides to you help and comfort.

Do you always look up to Him both for your inner life and your outward service with the respectful dependence which is fitting? Don't you to often run before His call and act independently of His aid?

Let's humble ourselves this morning for past neglects, and now ask the heavenly dew to rest upon us, the sacred oil to anoint us, the celestial frame to burn within us. The Holy Spirit is not a temporary gift. He does not grow weary of us, but awaits to be gracious still.

"You have forsaken your first love." Revelation 2:4 (NIV)

As our hearts and minds turn towards Valentine's Day. A day that we in a secular sense give tokens of our affection to people we love. Those tokens are in the form of jewelry, candy, flowers, etc. Individuals measure the extent to which one loves them by the value of the token given. I believe that is unfortunate because matters of the heart are invaluable. As a result how do you place a value on affection and true love?

One knows love in all of its dimensions. One can feel love at every level in which it is presented. One can express love through methods greater than words. Love is a universal language. Love is powerful indeed.

For people of faith, God is love. The very essence of the Divine is an expression of love.

The challenge this morning is found in the Revelation text cited above: Have you forsaken your first love?

Your first love is Him who spoke you into existence, who breathed the breathe of life into your being, and who lit the spark of life in your body.

Your first love sacrificed Himself for you and made an everlasting covenant with you.

Your first love desires the best for you and seek to find you in His favor.

In the press of everyday life and the tension of our mortal existence, have you forsaken or forgotten your first love - God?

At some cognitive level, you may say I always think about God. But I'm talking about the commitment level. The level where one yields the nerve center of your consent to God such that your yielding means more than if you live or die.

Have you given yourself totally to the God who has made you?

Do you give Him continuous praise and adoration?

Do you love God?

Well the good news is, "God loves you!!!!"

The Morning Clouds

"I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. return to me, for I have redeemed you." Isaiah 44:22

As clouds are of many shapes and colors, so are our transgressions. As clouds obscure the light of the sun, and darken the landscape beneath, so do our sins hide the light of God's face from us and cause us to sit in the shadow of death.

It is good to know that when we return to God, His spirit grants us mercy and His desire is to redeem us from our sins. He will throw your sins into the sea of forgetfulness. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they will be white as snow."

It is good to know that you can return and receive pardon. The Father is always waiting for you to come home and the welcome home sign is available to you right now!

How to have Plenty!

Philippians 4: 12, "I know what it is to have plenty." (NIV)

There are many who know "how to be in need," but have you learned "how to have plenty." Too many people when they find themselves on the pinnacle of success become dizzy and disoriented and as a result experience terrible and swift falls. Current news events chronicles the life stories of persons whose meteor flew swiftly across the sky, only to burn out by the rapidness of the flight and the inability to sustain its momentum.

Paul in his letter to the church at Phillipa shares a significant word that is sometimes overlooked, "Do you know who to handle plenty?" The crucible of adversity is less serve of a trial for people of faith, than the refining experience of prosperity. Abundant grace should enable you to bear prosperity abundantly. Have you learned the lesson of being content in times of lack and plenty? In times of plenty one has to deal with a false sense of pride and entitlement. In times of plenty one has to deal with the illusion that you made it by yourself. In times of plenty one has to deal with forgetfulness of God's goodness, grace and mercy. We must be mindful that in our prayers, we ask God to teach us how to understand the blessing of plenty. When you learn that lesson God will bless you with all that is good and you will enjoy the richness of a life of plenty.
