U.S. Marshall George K. McKinney

Persons that understand African-American history would know that Frederick Douglass was the first African American appointed as a United States Marshal for the District of Columbia (D.C.).

Did you know that there is an African American who holds the distinction of being appointed U.S. Marshal by two different Presidents from different parties to two different jurisdictions?

That person is Retired U.S. Marshal George K. McKinney. He was appointed to be the U.S. Marshal for Washington, D.C. by President Nixon, a Republican.  He was later appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the U.S. Marshal for Maryland, a Democrat. .

An interesting footnote, he delivered the subpoena from Judge Sirica to President Nixon for his Watergate activities; President Nixon, as mentioned above, appointed him to the post.

  3. In my 30 plus years of military/federal law enforcement experience, I have come across very few real men I wished to emulate. U.S. Marshal George McKinney was one of them. I met him in 2000 when I reported to be one of his deputies in the district of Maryland. Although a man of great stature and command presence, he made me feel appreciated and proud to be under his command. Thank you Marshal McKinney. You will be dearly missed.

  5. I too was lucky to serve as a deputy for this great man. As a deputy, working for him made me a better deputy. As a man, knowing him made me a better man. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Safe Passage Marshal.
