Unity in God's House

Posted by Unknown Sunday, July 31, 2011 0 comments

Later, this morning, I intend to tackle a sensitive subject within most churches, "Unity." My sermon title is, "Unity in God's House." Scripture reference is Ephesians 4: 1 - 5. In fact, you can read all of chapters 4 & 5 for the full understanding.

Paul addresses the idea of unity within the local church by offering three fundamental concepts everyone must recognize and either adopt or avoid.

The first is one propensity to emphasize differences as division. In God's house, differences are not a deficient, but create a mosaic that reflects God's plan for diversity as power.

The second is that people have to obtain a greater sense of maturity. When one becomes mature they gain wisdom. From wisdom, you obtain understanding. Maturity, wisdom and understanding are important for one to come to know that God's way is the only way.

Finally, everyone has to seek to live a life of purity. Purity brings humility, and humility brings unity.

Let the Church say, Amen!

Officer Teresa Rigby

I happened to be driving Route 83 on the morning of this accident. I witnessed the scene and saw the crashed vehicles. For Officer Teresa Rigby to survive the fall is nothing less than a miracle. Her quick thinking saved her life. She had to decide between two difficult choices: remain in the path of the vehicle or jump over the side of the highway.

I pray for her recovery and restoration. She is an amazing woman of God.

What do do when you are miserable?

Posted by Unknown Friday, July 29, 2011 0 comments

"In their misery they will earnest seek me." Hosea 5:15

There is a saying, "misery loves company." It's intent is to communicate that miserable people make other people miserable.

As I move throughout the community, I encounter some people who communicate to me very miserable stories. Inter-family conflict, inter sibling rivalries, issues with drugs, sex, and criminal activity are topics of many of the discussions. Layered upon those topics are economic issues: little money, infrequent job opportunities, no advancement on the job, and no job training being available.

It is amazing to me how hopeless some people have become: we live in America, not India, Brazil, or the Sudan We live in a land of rich opportunities. However, we have a misery index that is very high.

The Holy Bible is my guide in life. This text informs me that when misery comes, and it often does; you should seek the Lord for comfort and security. Too many people seek the advice of others, or drown themselves in their own misery through substances.

If misery cannot drive you to the throne of mercy, nothing will.

Your Post Office

Posted by Unknown Thursday, July 28, 2011 0 comments

If the post office closed in your neighborhood would you miss it? They are proposing that three close near where I live. The primary one I use will remain open. Should there be a post office every three miles? In these days and times, I really don't think so. If my bill collectors can't send my bills through the mail, will they attempt to get me to accept the bill electronically? If I have to pay them, will I be required to pay them electronically? I think we better get use to limited service from the Post Office. I feel for those persons who will lose jobs and for those persons who will not have the opportunity to work for the Postal Services.

"He left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house." Genesis 39:12

Some of you remember the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife; instead of compromising his principles, he ran away from her and avoided her advances.

In some situations to be safe, you must run from acts of evil and sin. You may need a covenant with your eyes not look upon causes of temptation, because just a spark from a look could become a blazing fire in an instant.

This day, you and I, may be exposed to great peril, may we have the serpent's wisdom to keep out of it and avoid it. The wings of a dove may be more useful for us this day, to keep us out of the jaws of a lion.

It may be better to be an apparent loser by declining evil. Why? Because it is better to lose your cloak, then your character.

No ties of friendship, no chains of beauty, no flashing of talent, no shafts of ridicule should turn you from fleeing from sin.

All you need to do is to "commit yourself to God, to resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Furthermore, if he doesn't flee, then it is alright for you to flee.

5 Facts about 1st Time Guests

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, July 27, 2011 0 comments

Five Significant Facts about First-Time Guests

Healthy and growing churches pay close attention to the people they count as members, as well as those people who are not yet a part of the flock. These churches know that new people are the lifeblood of a growing church. Like a spigot, they want to keep the valve open for the flow of new people, and most importantly, they want to ensure that nothing impairs or cuts off the flow of new people to the church.

With that in mind, pastors need to be aware of five significant facts about first-time guests looking for a church home.

1. Visitors make up their minds regarding a new church in the first ten minutes of their visit.

Often, before a first-time guest has sung an inspiring song or watched a compelling drama or viewed a well-produced video vignette or heard a well-crafted sermon, they have made up their mind whether or not to return. In fact, if you ask most church leaders, far more time and energy are spent on the plan and execution of the worship service, with only minimal time spent on preparing for the greeting and welcoming of the first-time guest, which is equally if not more important. Most pastors would rather not hear this: The church’s ability to connect with first-time guests is not dependent on you, but on those first lines of people who represent your church.

  • Are parking attendants in place?
  • Is there appropriate signage?
  • Are your ushers and greeters performing the “right” job?
  • Is the environment you take for granted user-friendly and accepting to guests?

2. Most church members aren’t friendly.

Churches claim to be friendly. In fact, many churches put that expression in their logo or tag line. But my experience in visiting churches as a first-time guest proves otherwise. The truth is that most church members are friendly to the people they already know, but not to guests.

  • Observe to see if your members greet guests with the same intensity and concern before and after the worship service as they do during a formal time of greeting in the worship service. A lack of friendliness before and after the service sends a mixed, if not hypocritical, message to new people.
  • The six most important minutes of a church service, in a visitor’s eyes, are the three minutes before the service and the three minutes after the service, when church members introduce themselves, seeking genuinely to get to know the visitors (not just obtain personal information like the market research data collectors at the mall), offer to answer any questions, introduce them to others who may have a connection (perhaps they live in the same neighborhood, are from the same hometown or state, or their children attend the same school), or any number of ways to demonstrate to the visitors that they as a church member care.
  • A church would be wise to discover their most gregarious and welcoming members and deploy them as unofficial greeters before and after each service, in addition to designated parking-lot greeters, door greeters, ushers, and informational booth personnel.
  • Don’t make promises the church can’t keep. My wife attended a church recently that calls itself “The Friendly _______ Baptist Church,” but no one spoke to her before the service and when she sought information from the guest information booth she was treated by the attendant as a bother. Mixed messages and unfulfilled promises do great harm in a church’s effectiveness in welcoming new people.

3. Church guests are highly consumer-oriented.

“If Target doesn’t have what I need, I just head to K-Mart.” “If the Delta airfare is too high, American might have a sale.” Capitalism has taught us that if we don’t find what we want, someone else down the street or at another web site will have it. If your church building is too hard for newcomers to navigate, if they have to park in the “back 40,” if your people are unaccepting and unfriendly, another church down the street may have what they’re looking for. Or worse yet, they may decide getting into a church is not worth the effort and give up their search altogether.

  • Pastors and church leaders need to look at their churches through the eyes of a first-time guest. Rick Warren says that the longer a pastor has been a pastor, the less he thinks like a non-pastor. That same thought would apply to thinking like a guest.
  • The use of objective, yet trained, anonymous guests to give an honest appraisal is very important. Many retail outlets utilize the service of one or more “mystery guests” to provide helpful analysis of welcoming and responding to the consumer. Churches would be well served to utilize a similar service.

4. The church is in the hospitality business.

Though our ultimate purpose is spiritual, one of our first steps in the Kingdom business is attention to hospitality. Imagine the service that would be given to you in a first-class hotel or a five-star restaurant. Should the church offer anything less to those who have made the great effort to be our guests?

  • Hospitality is almost a forgotten virtue in our society. When was the last time someone invited you to their home for a meal? But it needs to be reawakened.
  • Church members can extend hospitality to guests by offering to sit with them during the church service, giving them a tour of the church facilities, inviting them to lunch after service, or connecting with them later in the week.

5. You only have one chance to make a good first impression.

More than a truism, first impressions are lasting ones. Little hope of correcting a bad first impression is possible. Your first-time guests have some simple desires and basic needs. They decide very quickly if you can meet those criteria. The decision to return for a second visit is often made before guests reach your front door.

  • Are you creating the entire experience, beginning with your parking lot?
  • Are you consciously working to remove barriers that make it difficult for guests to find their way around and to feel at home with your people?
  • Do newcomers have all the information they need without having to ask any embarrassing questions?
  • Are your greeters and ushers on the job, attending to details and anticipating needs before they are expressed?
  • Does anything about your guests’ first experience make them say, “Wow!” and want to return?

You may be the most skilled preacher and your church may have excellent small groups or the best children’s ministry in the city. Your first-time guests will never know unless they make a second or third visit. Will they come back? It all depends on the impression you’re making. Make it the right one the first time.

We are The Chosen Ones

"His forces are beyond number." Joel 2: 11

Last night I listened to President Obama's speech outlining the current budget issue and debt ceiling. He didn't seem forceful in his explanation, but somewhat tentative. The Republican Party at a minimal has caused server stagnation in Washington. As President it seems he is not able to get his way. At every point, he is meeting with resistance.

The President, just like us, may not realize that when times are tough, that’s the time you appeal to God for his mercy and protection. In the rough and tough world of Washington, and the rough and tough world of life, God has a force beyond number that he can unleash on your behalf.

All the forces of heaven are at His beck and call. Legions of angels are ready to respond to God's command. Sometimes we are blinded by the forces of evil arrayed against us. All you need to do is to look to the hills from whence cometh you strength, and you will discover a band of angels circling your enemies. The battle is not yours. It is the Lord's.

If you are a solider of the cross, be encouraged, for the enemy is powerless compared to the forces God has. His forces are beyond number, and they are available to you. Yes, Mr. President they are also available to you.

Butch Lewis represented major fighters in his day as a boxing promoter. I remember him when I worked in D.C. as a man totally involved in his community. He was known as someone you could talk to and was always willing to give people a helping hand. He prospered in the rough and tumble world of professional sports. He made millions, but never loss touch with the common man. He has joined our celestial angels. He has fought a good fight. He has kept the faith.

I've just added the link to his funeral service in Delaware.

Stand Firm

Posted by Unknown 0 comments

"Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today." Exodus 14:13

When we find yourself in tough situations or in extraordinary circumstances, these words should give you comfort. You cannot retreat; you cannot go forward; you are struck between a rock and a hard place; what are you going to do? God says, "Stand Firm!"

Don't listen to Despair that says, "Lie down and die, give it all up."

Don't listen to Cowardice that says, "Retreat; go back to the worldly way of doing things, you cannot play the Christian part. It is too difficult. Give up your principles."

Don't listen to Precipitation that says, "Do something, stir yourself; to stand still and wait is idleness." You must do something at once, instead of looking to the Lord.

Don't listen to Presumption that boasts, "Expect a miracle and march on into the sea."

True Faith listens to neither to Presumption, nor to Despair, nor to Cowardice, nor to Precipitation, but it hears God say, "Stand Firm." Become an immovable rock and "Stand Firm."

Keep your posture straight, be ready for action, expect further orders, and if you cheerfully and patiently wait; you will hear God's voice distinctly saying to you, "Go Forward."

Those of the faith need to connect worship and service. When they do, the world will be transformed into an oasis governed by God's love.

We Need Order

Posted by Unknown Friday, July 22, 2011 0 comments

"They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead."

Joel 2: 8 (NIV)

Locust always keeps their rank, and although their number is legion, they do not crowd upon each other, to throw their columns into confusion.

The spirit of order is infused into the universe by God. Why does humankind have such a problem with the order and lean towards disorder? In my local community, it is surprising and astonishing how quickly my colleagues are willing to speak publicly about matters that we should deal with internally. In families, their issues and concerns so quickly become fodder for the rumor mill and active on the grapevine. We tend to disorder, when in God's universe, he seeks an order.

I'm reminded of the Song That Says, "Order my steps in Your Word Dear Lord."

That's my prayer for each of you today!

Stay Out of Mess!

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, July 20, 2011 0 comments

Some people may remember the Laurel and Hardy show. If you do, you will remember one of the lines that were repeated over and over, "What a fine mess you have gotten me into." It appears that in life, you encounter mess! Mess is defined as those attitudes, attributes, and/or actions that take you away from the will and way of God. As a result, I say, "Stay Out of Mess."

For the Bible Scholars among us, I will direct you to Psalm 107. In that Psalm, you will discover three universal situations. I describe as a mess.

First is in verses 4 - 5, where the psalmist describes a situation where people are wandering in the desert and run out of food. There is some mess that you did not create. It's when the circumstances of life overtake you, and you find yourself in a mess, not of your own making.

Second is in verse 17, where the psalmist calls people fools because of there sins they create situations that have consequences. "You cannot make a success out of sin." There is some mess that you do create and as a result there is a harvest that you have to reap.

Third is in verses 23 - 26, describes seamen that are businessmen and that thought their actions their business is in ruins. The third mess people encounter is a financial mess. You cannot spend more than you earn. You have to save a portion of what you earn. You need to give a tithe to the Lord. You have to pay your taxes. You have to learn how to live on what is left. By my estimation, you need to learn to live on fifty percent of what you earn. If you violate this principle you are headed for a financial mess.

President Nelson Mandela

Posted by Unknown Tuesday, July 19, 2011 0 comments

Happy Birthday, President Nelson Mandela, who has turned 93 years old. We all stood in awe as he made his parade from prison into world history to become the President of South African. As the people were celebrating by dancing and singing, the question was asked of him, "see the people are excited because they are free." He responded, "They are not free. They are loose."

President Mandela has provided sage advice throughout the ages on what it means to fight, struggle, plan, and legislate for freedom. He has fought against the system and within the system to assert, a person right to be free.

Have we listened? No, the people of South Africa have given him respect, but did not fully listen to the advice of a this wise man. Have people around the world listened, no, particularly African Americans. We are still wrestling with our looseness and have not made much progress in our freedom march.

Have we developed leaders who are able to stand on a world stage? We thought President Obama would be such a leader, but we are finding out that the political rough and tumble of Washington, is slowly but surely chipping at his status and stature.

That's what makes President Mandela such an icon figure. He stands for something that will survive the test of time - A REAL BLACK MAN!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us: it's in everyone. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
Nelson Mandela

For Those Who Come in Last

Posted by Unknown Monday, July 18, 2011 0 comments

"They will set out last, under their standards." Numbers 2:31

In life, everyone cannot be first, is it alright to be last? Scripture says that the "last shall be first, and the first shall be last." Nevertheless, there appears to be very severe consequences to coming in last place in this world. It seems the one who is last gets the least. It seems the one who is last is quickly forgotten. It seems the one who is last is ridiculed.

The text this morning clearly identifies that the tribe of Dan will be last in the formation. They are to bring up the rear. Their position matters since they are truly a part of the host as were the foremost tribes; they followed the same fiery cloudy pillar, ate of the same manna, drank of the same spiritual rock, and journeyed to the same inheritance.

Those who are last should cheer up since you are still a part of God's army. Someone must be last. Someone must do the menial tasks for our Lord. Someone has to bring up the rear, so, why not you?

Remember those who are last serve a very useful place. They pick up the stragglers. They recover lost property. They protect the rear from attack.

Remember the rear guard is a place of danger. Foes come from behind as well as before. When people are doubting, becoming hopeless, wavering in their spirits, become lost in their faith; those who pick up the rear are able to give them comfort, encouragement, and direction.

There is a role for everyone and every role is important in God's army.

Yes, even for those who are last!

My thanks to the staffs and to Senator Benjamin Cardin and Senator Barbara Mikulski who made the arrangements for The Hathaway Family Reunion in Washington, D.C. to tour the White House on August 6th. They arranged for 150 of our family members to tour together.

I anticipate this experience to be epic within our family and a moment we will never forget.

It would be good if either President or First Lady said, "Hello!"

It Pays to Learn to Listen

Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, Maryland, is rising quickly within our state ranks because he listens. A good listener can go a long way because they will first hear from the people prior to their offering solutions to problems that they may not really understand.

I've found Lt. Governor Brown to be a good listener and a thoughtful thinker.

I suggest that people begin to pay attention to him now.

Who knows where he will be within a few years?

The Secret Revealed

"Tell me the secret of your great strength." Judges 16:6

For those who know the story of Sampson and Delilah, he reveals to her the secret of his great strength. He first thought it was in his hair, only to find out later it was in his faith in God.

It is on secret what God can do. What he has done for others he will do for you?

The key to life is a boundless faith in God that through all of life circumstances, good and bad, He is with you and cares for you.

That truth will give you the kind of faith that will move mountains.

Drink Plenty of Water in this Heat

Posted by Unknown Monday, July 11, 2011 0 comments

My sister and her family are on vacation, and their dog is at home. My daughter goes over to feed, walk him and make certain that he has plenty of water to drink. I went with her today and watch in amazement as the dog attempted to communicate that he needed to go outside for a bathroom break; after that he came inside to drink plenty of water because it was so hot. We must be sensitive to all of God creation and the creatures who populate the earth. You know. We are one of the creatures too!

History was made on Saturday, July 9th with the signing of an Economic Inclusion Plan for the State Center Project. Through this plan, we will be able to ensure, monitor and manage the local hiring of residents in Zipcodes 21201, 21202, & 21217 as receiving first priority. We will also make certain that project bids are bundled in amounts that permit MBE/WBE firms to complete. Implicit in all that is being done is persons who are hired and firms that are awarded contracts are local African American firms and indigenous to the Baltimore City community.

Signers to the document are Ms. Caroline Moore, developer, Dr. S. Todd Yeary, Principal CC4CD, and Mr. John Kyle, SCNA.

Standing behind them to ensure that the goals are met: Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway, Sr., and Congressman Elijah E. Cummings.

When the story is told about what was necessary to get to this point, people who are so enamored with the election process will realize that when an organization establishes its position on a matter; true power is causing the political and economic forces to endorse your position.

For Healing We Need Praying!

Posted by Unknown Sunday, July 10, 2011 0 comments

Yesterday was a wonderful day. It began with the distribution and feeding of over 500 families within the State Center Community. It continued with the signing of The Economic Inclusion Plan that will ensure local residents are given first priority in the hiring process for State Center and that MBE's and WBE's get a fair share of the economic benefits that are derived from this project, and its ended with our Church's Annual Picnic in Patapsco State Park.

In the conversations of the day with people from all walks of life, I was reminded of the disconnect of people to the economic, political and spiritual aspects of life. One gentleman told me he was the giant puzzle in life with the inability to put the pieces together. Another gentleman told me he was a college educated, from out of town, living in a shelter, and had a wayward background, but was unable to get any assistance in his attempt to pull himself up. On the other hand, I had persons tell me the wonderful experience, they were having distributing food to people and signing them up to register to vote. Still others told me about the joy they were having sharing in a church picnic among family, friends and believers.

All of these experiences from yesterday, led me to read once again from 2 Chronicles 7: 14, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

IMA Endorses Mayor

Posted by Unknown Friday, July 8, 2011 0 comments

Becoming fodder on talk show radio and journalistic blogs was the recent endorsement of members of the Interdenominational Minster's Alliance of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake. It is reported that Senator Catherine Pugh challenged the selection process. At the crux of the matter is the endorsement process did not follow the organizations' historic procedures. I will agree that is unfortunate. The IMA and its leaders must be careful that they are not above critique, and their actions must be above reproach. There was a period in time when it was necessary for clergy to provide political guidance to the African American community. There was a time when it was necessary to galvanized people to vote for a candidate who promised to place agenda item's front and center who supported the African American community. Organizations, such as the IMA, actually ran candidates for public office. With the sophistication of the political process and campaign tactics, the real problem is that the IMA didn't keep up with the times. Their process is “old school” and “old school” is out of date for these times.

The Help

Posted by Unknown 0 comments

Shared last night with my family, members of my church and community in watching a preview of the movie, "The Help." President Obama remarked during his first campaign, "America has to deal with the issue of race." This movie deals with race in an informative, entertaining and culturally relevant way. It reminds of us times gone by when the socially acceptable norm was for African Americans to serve so called, "White People." When society would dehumanize a race, this movie pulls back the covers and reveals the temperament, courage, and class of a race of people willing to sacrifice themselves for a future generation. It shows the alliances created by people of good will and people of strong will. When it is released to the general public, I recommend you do two things: read the book and see the movie.

John and Sylvia Mackey

Posted by Unknown Thursday, July 7, 2011 0 comments

With the passing of Mr. John Mackey, the community should rise in tribute and acknowledge the love, care and steadfastness of his wife, Sylvia. She demonstrated the strength in life that he possessed on the football field. Constantly, by his side, she was his nurse, advocate and field general in the fight with the NFL for its veteran players.

She refused to allow pity to beset the condition of Mr. Mackey. She saw his condition as another contestant in the game of life. She orchestrated the plays and set the tone for the treatment of Mr. Mackey, a football legend.

As the tributes pour in for Mr. John Mackey, my tribute goes to the virtuous woman who stood by his side, Mrs. Sylvia Mackey.

Only God could have produced a man who represents him so well that throughout the faith community, he is known as Dr. A.C. D. Vaughn. For those who may not know, he is the Pastor of Sharon Baptist Church and the Chairman of the Hampton Minister's Conference. His influence reaches wide and is deep within the fabric of America. His ability to connect with the common man is legendary. His love for his wife and family is honorable and worthy of replication. He has been an active minister for over 50 years. Without question, Dr. A.C. D. Vaughn is a man of God. This morning I speak the power of God word and I pray for him as he has done for so many for so long. Will you join me in speaking the power of love and prayer for him this morning?

Tha Lamb is The Light

Posted by Unknown Wednesday, July 6, 2011 0 comments

This picture depicts a lamb and a sheep. In biblical terms, Jesus is the Lamb, who was slain, and we are His sheep. The Book of Revelation presents another image of the lamb as a lamp, "The Lamb is its lamp." Revelation 21:23.

This is an important image because light in Scripture is the emblem for joy. What is our joy? Jesus choose us, loved us, bought us, cleansed us, robed us, kept us glorified us and saved us. That's why the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Light is also the cause of beauty. Nothing of beauty is left when the light is gone. Without light a diamond loses its gleam, without light no radiance flashes from a sapphire, and without light the moon has no glow. The Word says that Jesus is the light of the world.

Light manifests. In other words, what it is does not become until it is revealed by the Light. Things remain hidden until light reveals their presence and power. Light manifests transformation. The word says its does not "yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear (light), we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."

The issue is JOBS

Posted by Unknown Tuesday, July 5, 2011 0 comments

Over the past year I have focused significant time and attention upon the issue of job creation and job training. Severely lacking on a local level is the sense of urgency about this matter. While periodically job fairs are sponsored, there seems to be a disconnect between those persons who desperately need a job and the opportunities that are swirling around someplace in the air.

There appears to be a lack of coordination between DLLR and MOED and the various intake centers situated throughout the community.

It is time to focus concentrated attention on job placement and job retention on the part of the "system." There is the need for those persons looking for jobs to realize that in this economy you have to start somewhere and that where you start is not necessarily where you will end up. Hard work is still in order. Discipline at the workplace is still required.

I'm listening intently to our local political officials who are seeking either reelection or election for there plan to address the issue of jobs: job training, job placement and job retention. The person(s) who addresses that issue with clarity will earn my vote.
